Visitors to Lanzarote are spending more than they used to, but only a small amount of that extra spend is finding its way into the island's shops and restaurants. In the second quarter of 2026 the average tourist spent €181.90 a day, up almost 18 per cent on the €154.56 they spent a year earlier. However, most of this is spent on two things before anyone sets foot on the island, the flight and the hotel.

AENA has installed automated barriers at the bus parking area of César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport, in a change designed to improve the turnover of coaches and minibuses serving the arrivals zone. The barriers are now operational and form part of a wider effort to ease congestion in the area immediately outside Terminal 1, where transfer coaches, tour operator vehicles and excursion buses pick up arriving passengers throughout the day.

Lanzarote registered the highest average daily tourist spend across the entire Canary Islands during the first quarter of 2026, according to the latest tourist expenditure survey published by ISTAC, the Canary Islands Statistics Institute.

The yellow weather warning covering Lanzarote has been extended into the early part of next week, with the official AEMET forecast pointing to sustained high temperatures and the possibility of inland readings reaching 37°C during the most intense phase of the heatwave. Spain's national meteorological agency has classified the current spell as one of the earliest significant heat events of the year across the Canary Islands.

Visitors and residents across Lanzarote are being urged to prepare for one of the hottest spells of the year so far, with the current Canary Islands heatwave forecast to push temperatures well above the May average over the coming days. Official figures from Spain's national meteorological agency AEMET point to a sustained period of intense heat, extreme UV levels and largely cloud-free skies through to the middle of next week.
