  • Lanzarote Braces for Weekend Heatwave as IRONMAN Athletes Prepare for Extreme Conditions

Lanzarote is preparing for a significant rise in temperatures this weekend, with official forecasts pointing to a building heatwave that will coincide with the arrival of thousands of athletes and spectators for the 2026 IRONMAN Lanzarote on Saturday 23 May.

The latest seven-day forecast from Spain's national meteorological agency AEMET shows daytime maximum temperatures in Arrecife climbing steadily through the week, from 24°C on Tuesday to 27°C on Wednesday, 28°C on Thursday, 29°C on Friday and 31°C on race day itself. The peak of the heatwave is expected on Sunday at 32°C, with Monday holding at 31°C before conditions begin to ease. Overnight minimum temperatures are forecast to remain between 17°C and 20°C, offering little respite from the daytime heat.

Inland areas of the island, including parts of Tinajo, San Bartolomé and the volcanic interior, are likely to feel hotter still due to lower wind exposure and more intense sunshine away from the cooling effect of the Atlantic. The forecast arrives just as one of the world's toughest endurance events takes place on the island, creating demanding conditions for competitors and visitors alike.

IRONMAN Lanzarote Faces Tougher Conditions Than Usual

The 34th edition of IRONMAN Lanzarote, organised by Club La Santa, attracts more than 1,150 athletes from across Europe and around the world each year. The race is already regarded as one of the most demanding events on the global IRONMAN circuit due to the island's volcanic terrain, persistent trade winds and challenging cycling routes. The addition of 31°C heat on race day is expected to push the difficulty of this year's event up another level.

Competitors face a 3.8 kilometre open-water swim from Playa Grande in Puerto del Carmen, followed by a 180 kilometre bike course across the island, and a full 42.2 kilometre marathon along the Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife coastline. With the bulk of the race taking place between mid-morning and late evening, athletes will be exposed to prolonged periods of strong UV radiation and rising afternoon temperatures throughout the day. The slowest finishers, completing the full course in close to the 17-hour cut-off, will be racing through the hottest part of the afternoon and into the warm evening.

Medical teams and race organisers are expected to step up hydration and safety provisions across the course, with additional water stations, ice supplies and cooling measures likely to be put in place. Emergency services across Lanzarote are also anticipated to be on heightened standby for heat-related incidents over the weekend.

    What the AEMET Forecast Shows

The current AEMET forecast for Arrecife confirms clear skies across the build-up to the race and on race day itself, with no rainfall expected at any point during the seven-day window. UV levels remain at high readings throughout the period. Coastal resorts including Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise are expected to see temperatures broadly in line with the Arrecife forecast, while sheltered inland locations could see slightly higher readings during the middle of the day.

Humidity levels will sit in the moderate range, but direct sun exposure during the middle of the day will make conditions feel notably hotter, particularly between midday and late afternoon when the combination of heat and high UV levels is at its strongest.

Heat Safety Advice for Tourists and Spectators

Local authorities are urging visitors to take sensible precautions during the warmer conditions, particularly those planning to spend extended periods outdoors watching the IRONMAN, on the beach, or exploring the island's volcanic landscapes. Hydration is the single most important consideration during the hottest periods, with regular water intake recommended throughout the day regardless of whether thirst is felt. Lanzarote's dry climate accelerates fluid loss and dehydration can develop quickly in conditions of this kind.

The hottest hours of the day typically fall between midday and four in the afternoon, and visitors are advised to seek shade or air-conditioned indoor spaces during this window where possible. UV levels in the Canary Islands during late spring are extremely high, and the use of high-factor sunscreen with frequent reapplication, particularly after swimming, is strongly recommended.

Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing, a hat and good quality sunglasses all help to reduce heat exposure during long days outside. Alcohol consumption should be approached with care during heatwave conditions, as it increases the rate of dehydration. Families travelling with young children and older visitors should pay particular attention to the early signs of heat exhaustion and sunstroke, which can develop rapidly in vulnerable individuals.

Beaches and Resort Areas Set for Busy Weekend

The combination of IRONMAN weekend and rising temperatures is expected to draw large crowds to Lanzarote's beaches, resort seafronts and restaurant areas. The Puerto del Carmen seafront, Playa Grande, Matagorda, Arrecife and the volcanic cycling routes inland are all expected to be particularly busy across Saturday, with restaurants, cafés and bars trading at peak levels throughout race day and into the evening.

Drivers should also factor in extensive road closures and traffic restrictions linked to the IRONMAN, which will affect every municipality on the island during Saturday. Journeys that would normally take 20 minutes may take considerably longer, particularly along the LZ-2 between Puerto del Carmen and Arrecife, the LZ-1 between Arrecife and Costa Teguise, and the northern routes through Haría. Visitors with airport transfers, dinner reservations or organised excursions on Saturday are advised to allow significantly more time than usual.

Lanzarote's Standing as a Sports Tourism Destination

The IRONMAN remains one of Lanzarote's most significant annual sporting events and continues to underline the island's position as a leading destination for endurance sport. Athletes have been flying in from across the world in recent days, with some travelling from as far as Australia to compete in this year's race. The combination of consistent sunshine, varied and demanding terrain, scenic coastal roads and well-established tourism infrastructure makes the island particularly popular with triathletes, cyclists, runners and open-water swimmers throughout the year.

This year's race carries additional significance as the final edition of IRONMAN Lanzarote organised by Club La Santa, which has been at the centre of the event since its inception in 1992. The combination of that milestone and the building heatwave is likely to produce one of the most memorable race weekends in the event's 34-year history.

Despite the challenging conditions, tourism officials expect another strong weekend across the island, with hotels in Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca close to full occupancy and visitor numbers holding firm into the start of the summer season.
