La Geria, Growing Wine Lanzarote's Way La Geria, Growing Wine Lanzarote's Way

The La Geria region in Lanzarote comes under the Agricultural Experimental Farm, founded in 1965 to support farm development in Lanzarote.

Excursions Lanzarote

Over the years "the farm" (popularly known) has encouraged and brought under its roof numerous farmers who can avail many services like course development, technical advice, grants procedures, inspections, campaigns, publications, among many others.

It is a fundamental link to the survival of agriculture and livestock on the island and with it Lanzarote's landscapes and traditions.

The La Geria area or the wine valley of La Geria has many local wineries, called "Bodegas", which are very good examples of how the future of this region is benefiting ecologically but also is profitable to the farmers, you can also visit the El Grifo Wine Museum, they have won quite a few Wine Awards for Lanzarote.

Look for yourself, how the vineyards in the La Geria region are grown in the Short South Tour Excursion where you visit a local winery, enjoy wine tasting and see how locals cultivate their wine in an ingenious way. The locals of the island found an ingenious way to cultivate vines on this volcanic and hostile ground. They do this by digging more than 10000 funnel shaped hollows into the thick layers of the volcanic ashes, and plant one vine per hollow, fill them with soil and then pour back the ashed soil or picon over it. Small semi circular walls are built around them to protect them from winds and drying out. Simply marvelous!!!!

Before you pack your bags home, don't forget to buy Lanzarote wine as souvenirs, Lanzarote has some award winning wines worth trying.
