August bucked the trend, with around 1.24 million arrivals, up 0.3 per cent. British visitors made up 37.3 per cent of them, by far the largest market, and Lanzarote took about a fifth of all arrivals, behind Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
Spending tells a different story to the headcount. International visitors spent around €2,296 million in August, 3.1 per cent more than last year. The average holiday cost €1,851 per person, and daily spending rose 7.6 per cent to €224.
The reason is that holidays are getting shorter. The average August stay fell 4.5 per cent to 8.3 nights, and the average for January to August was 7.9 days. Most visitors still stay in hotels and apartments, and holidays remain by far the main reason for coming.
If you are booking a shorter break this winter, Lanzarote's weather stays warm through the season, and there is plenty to fit into a week with our pick of things to do in Lanzarote.
