June 2017 is a long way, but we may be able to see some changes being implemented from 30th April 2016, where extra charges will be capped, saving users 75% on their data usage in the EU.
So the mobile operators can charge when on roaming for:
Outgoing Calls: €0.05 (3.5p) extra per minute, at present you pay €0.19, the incoming voice calls is at present changed €0.05 (rate change unconfirmed)
SMS: €0.02 for every extra SMS, at present you pay €0.06
Data: €0.05 extra per megabyte of data used, at present you pay €0.20
That means by June 2017, you will be charged the same in any part of the EU like you would in your home country, which is just fabulous.
So till then make sure you have a data package loaded on your mobile plan before going on a holiday and make sure to use it wisely. These changes only are useful for those coming from the UK, unfortunately, American and other travelers (outside EU and UK) do not have this facility.
