How was Cueva de Los Verdes formed?

Cueva de Los Verdes, was created some 3000 years ago after lava from Mount Corona formed a solid crust, and the lava flowed across the Malpaís de la Corona towards the sea. Along the cave, the lava collapsed forming Jameos or a cavern. For about 6 kms, the caves on the land and 1.5 kms underwater.

Historical Significance of Cueva de Los Verdes

The historical significance of the caves is that inhabitants had used these caves as a hiding place from pirates and slave raiders.

Interesting Facts about Cueva de Los Verdes:

- In 1960's the caves were illuminated by colorful lights for tourism by local artist Jesus Soto.

- Access to the caves for tourists is 1 km long.

- There are about 16 Jameos, ie., openings giving access to various caves.

- The underwater caves are called "Tunnel of Atlantis."

- The temperature inside the caves is around 19 º C - due to the air draughts.

- The interiors of the caves are a beautiful phenomenon, especially the red color is nothing but basalt's (stone) iron oxidation. Since the caves are near the sea, the ochre colors are formed by salt water seeping in.

How do I visit Cueva de Los Verdes?

Cueva de Los Verdes can be visited from 10:00 am to 18:00 pm every day. The visit is an hour long and the last tour is at 17:00 pm.
