If Cesar Manrique had been alive, he would have celebrated his 97th birthday yesterday, on 24th April 2016.

Excursions Lanzarote

A remarkable personality, noted painter and architect, had dedicated his best work to changing Lanzarote’s rustic and mundane landscape into an art gallery which you and all those who visit Lanzarote can cherish and retrace the steps of Cesar Manrique.

The Cesar Manrique Foundation, his former home is one of the best places to visit in Lanzarote. It showcases how the artist lived. His house was built on a volcanic eruption which happened in the 18th century, where the rooms are bored into volcanic basalt. The house has an art gallery, where you can see original sketches by Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró and more of his artistic work. The other rooms include a recreational area, a swimming pool, a barbecue area and a small dance floor.

He has been instrumental in bringing a new meaning to Lanzarote’s roundabouts you can enjoy the unique looking wind toys in the Grand Tour by our partners Excursions Lanzarote. Cesar Manrique’s other famous artistic works can be seen in the volcanic caves of Jameos del Agua and Cueva de los Verdes. The Cactus Garden too is an amazing open air art extravaganza by Cesar Manrique where more than ten thousand cacti adorn an amphitheater style garden and the Mirador del Rio, a beautifully carved viewpoint overlooking the the Chinijo Islands and the untouched island of La Graciosa This is also a great way for kids to learn a lot about Lanzarote and so must be in your list of fun things to do with kids in Lanzarote.

If you've been to the island and never come across Cesar Manrique’s works, then you definitely need to do it in your next holiday to Lanzarote and if you are planning to fly to Lanzarote, then the Cesar Manrique Foundation should be on your list of Top Things to do in Lanzarote.
