Lanzarote has lost more than a thousand holiday rental homes from the booking platforms in the space of a year. Listings fell from 7,809 in July 2025 to 6,806 last month, a decline of 12.8 per cent, according to figures from the Canary Islands statistics institute, ISTAC. Every one of the island's seven municipalities saw a fall.

The figures do not say why the homes have gone, and there are a few possible explanations. New rules across Spain and the Canaries now require holiday lets to carry a valid registration number, so some listings may simply have been removed for not complying, and others may have shifted to long-term rental for local tenants. It is also possible that some owners have stopped advertising on the big platforms but continue to rent privately, which would not show up in figures drawn from those platforms. What the data cannot tell us is which of these is doing the most to drive the fall.

Municipality July 2025 July 2026 Change
Yaiza2,3742,019−15.0%
Tías2,1301,856−12.9%
Teguise1,6221,460−10.0%
Haría540467−13.5%
Arrecife500454−9.2%
San Bartolomé368326−11.4%
Tinajo275224−18.6%

The steepest fall in percentage terms was in Tinajo, down almost a fifth, with the rural north also hit hard in Haría. The resort municipalities lost the most in raw numbers, simply because they hold the most, Yaiza, which takes in Playa Blanca, shed 355 homes and Tías, home to Puerto del Carmen, lost 274. Arrecife and Teguise held up best in proportion.

The island is not alone in this. Across the Canaries as a whole, listings fell 15 per cent over the year, from 46,635 to 39,678, a loss of nearly 7,000 homes, and Lanzarote now makes up 17 per cent of the archipelago's holiday lets, behind Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Yet fewer homes has not meant much less income. Lanzarote's active rentals took 21.4 million euros in July, only four million down on a year earlier when there were a thousand more of them, so the properties still trading are each earning more, and with 95.5 per cent of available homes across the islands taking at least one booking, demand plainly has not gone anywhere.
