Celebrating World Ocean Day:
In a Press Conference last week, the mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, accompanied by the Councilor of Beaches, Nerea Santana, has announced that the Ecoplaya flag awarded by ATEGRUS (Technical Association for Waste Management, Urban Waste and Environment) will be hoisted on Playa Grande Beach Lanzarote in Puerto del Carmen on 8th June which coincides with the World Ocean Day.
Playa Grande Beach, the best in Lanzarote:
This year Puerto del Carmen is also celebrating 50 years as a tourist resort of Lanzarote and is making every effort to keep the resort and its beaches clean and beautiful. Playa Grande Beach Lanzarote being the main beach of Puerto del Carmen was given the Ecoplaya Flag award shows that the Municipality of Tias has made continuous commitment to improve quality of its coast keeping in mind the environment and tourism. It is also the first flag being awarded in the Canary Islands which is a very big achievement. There have been continuous cleaning of the beach, arrangement of access ramps and new toilets, temporary installation of floating water park, equipment for easy accessibility and use of materials that adapt to the environment, establishment of a complete rescue and First aid, sports and other activities aimed at raising awareness of the environmental wealth of the coast of Tías.
Week of Environment and Ocean Day:
From 5th June - 9th June 2017, the Week of Environment and Ocean Day will be celebrated and these days will be dedicated to the cleaning of the coast of Tias by volunteers of the Biosphere Reserve. The Bureau of the Biosphere Reserve and the students and staff of Zonzamas Institute, in Arrecife will hold workshops of recycling for students of public schools in the municipality and lectures in schools about plastic pollution in the marine environment will be taught.
Wind Toy Sculpture by César Manrique Inaugurated:
On June 5th, World Environment Day was celebrated by inaugurating a 12 meter high Wind Toy sculpture named El Róbalo designed by César Manrique was installed on the roundabout near to Avenida de las Playas near the Beach of Los Pocillos to also remember the 50th anniversary of La Tiñosa and Puerto Del Carmen as a tourist destination. Róbalo is the family of fish that inhabit the Canarian waters, and from here and Tiñosa, a fishing village, César Manrique too his inspiration of the wind toy. The mayor of Tías, Pancho Hernández, the brother of César Manrique Cabrera, Carlos, and his nephew, also the artist Eduardo Manrique, the president of the César Manrique Foundation, José Juan Ramírez Marrero, the director of the founding activities of the FCM, Fernando Gómez Aguilera as well as the councilors of the Municipal Government group were present for the occasion and acknowledged that because of César Manrique’s efforts Lanzarote is a Biosphere Reserve and a beautiful international tourist resort.
