Lanzarote has been Sánchez's summer choice for most years since he took office in 2019. He was here in 2023 alongside the adventurer Jesús Calleja and the filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar, and again in 2024 with Gómez and the Catalan regional president, Salvador Illa.
His base is La Mareta, a state-owned residence on the seafront at Costa Teguise. It was designed by César Manrique and the architect Fernando Higueras and built in the late 1970s for King Hussein of Jordan, who never stayed in it. Hussein handed it to King Juan Carlos I in 1989, and it passed to Patrimonio Nacional, the body that looks after state heritage property.
Since then it has served as an official holiday residence. Past guests include the German chancellors Helmut Kohl and Gerhard Schröder, the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the Czech president Václav Havel, and former Spanish prime ministers José María Aznar and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. Manrique's design is a low run of bungalows in gardens of palm, cactus and aloe, with terraces, sea views and a pool crossed by a small bridge.
