Lanzarote Beats the National Average on Unemployment Lanzarote Beats the National Average on Unemployment

Lanzarote's unemployment rate has fallen to 9.6%, the lowest of any Canary Island and the only one in the archipelago to sit below the Spanish national average of 9.8%. The figures come from the Active Population Survey (EPA) and the regional statistics institute, ISTAC.

It is also the only Canary Island under 10%, and well clear of the wider Canaries average of 11.2%. Fuerteventura is next at 10.4%, then Gran Canaria on 11.1% and Tenerife on 11.6%. La Palma (12.3%), La Gomera (13.1%) and El Hierro (14%) make up the rest.

The figure stands out because of the pressures the island is under, with an economy leaning heavily on tourism and hospitality, a squeezed housing market and a high cost of living.
