Fuerteventura's History
Fuerteventura is one of the oldest islands of the Canary Islands, some 20 million years ago, emerging out of volcanic eruptions. It is also the second largest one after Tenerife. Like Lanzarote, Fuerteventura is also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since May 2009. The original settlers of the island were from North Africa, but later the Spanish, Portuguese, English and French came along and settled. In the 1300s, the island also had two rulers who ruled the island, divided into two parts, King Guize and the other King Ayoze. There were also various pirates who invaded the island many times. The island is full of history with lots of relics from that era. Finally, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote became part of the Canary Islands in 1927.
Why Fuerteventura?
Fuerteventura too boasts of beautiful weather averaging 20 - 22 degrees throughout the year and is very easy to reach from Lanzarote. The main attractions in Fuerteventura are in Corralejo, which is a small northern fishing village, from where you can see the Islet of Lobos. You can also see the breathtaking Natural park, a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. It also has a promenade, with lots of bars, restaurants and shops, a good chance to try some local delicacies and also shop for souvenirs. You can also enjoy the sand dunes (take the Sand Dunes Excursion), 3.2 kms away from Corralejo. Corralejo also has some beautiful clean beaches.
Island hopping from Lanzarote to Fuerteventura is very convenient. Especially using the Ferry Service, check the Ferry Times here. But ferries run by Fred Olsen or Armas can be expensive, Ferry to Fuerteventura, run by Lineas Martimas Romero is more economical. Many tourists do not have the liberty of hired car or taxi or don't want to be hassled on the public transport, for this reason there is also a Bus Pick Up Service and the Ferry to Fuerteventura.
