It all started when on October 12th, 1810, the Crown Prince Ludwig (later became King Ludwig I) married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Since it was going to be a grand royal wedding, all the citizens of Munich were also invited to attend the festivities. The celebrations took place in front of the city gates, on the fields. To honor the Princess, people started calling the fields Theresienwiese ("Theresa's meadow"). Later the name was shortened and called "Wiesn". The celebrations went on till October 17th with horse races, like they took place in the 15th century.
The idea of repeating the celebrations the subsequent years gave birth to Oktoberfest. Slowly, the event grew bigger and spread to other countries. But the event in Munich, Germany is still celebrated with huge parades, dance, music and food for 16 days, but no horse racing, which actually ended 1960.
Oktoberfest is one such event which involves lots and lots of Beer!!!!
