Lanzarote is where you can discover and explore the Spanish traditions along with enjoying Christmas Dinners which we so much crave back in the UK.
When do Christmas Celebrations start and end in Lanzarote?
Christmas celebrations (Navidad) and preparations start from the Advent until the Epiphany or the Three kings Day parade (Cabalgata de Reyes).
Why is Christmas unique and different in Lanzarote?
In Lanzarote the Christmas Eve Mass holds a very important tradition. January 6th, the Epiphany is also celebrated fervently, because that is when the Three Kings brought their gifts for baby Jesus. To coincide with this biblical event, locals exchange their Christmas gifts on this day and huge parades take place with the Three Kings to mark this event.
What can I do for Christmas which is different?
Like the locals you can celebrate with a Christmas Eve dinner, followed by going out to see nativity displays in town, you will enjoy them especially the ones made with sand on beaches. The folklore dances and timple music is just out of this world. Also do not miss the Teguise Christmas Celebrations 2015 and Yaiza Christmas Celebrations 2015, where a Belén is made, which is a nativity scene, keeping in mind the landscape and features of Lanzarote.
What traditional but local delicacy can I eat?
For Christmas, you most definitely must try the Kings’ Cake, also known locally as Roscón de Reyes. Almost all shops around the island sell the Kings’ Cake. The special ingredients which make it different are lemon and orange juice, brandy and orange flower water, covered with crystallized fruits and sliced almonds. There is also a surprise gift inside the cake along with a broad bean. According to tradition, whoever gets the bean has to pay for the next cake!!!! Don't forget to take some sample cakes for your friends and family back home. You may also buy the cake at the Teguise Market.
Doesn't Santa come to give gifts in Lanzarote?
Santa Claus is just getting popular here, with so many tourists coming from the UK and US. But traditionally the Three Kings are equivalent to a Santa Claus for the local children. Traditionally, during the Three Kings parade on camels, taken place on January 6th, children are tossed candy and every family keeps a shoe outside their house so that the Three Kings know for how many people the gifts have to be brought. To treat the Kings, people also put out dried figs and an alcoholic drink for the kings and water for the camel. The next morning the children are excited to see gifts in exchange for the goodies they kept for the Three Kings.
These traditions are different yet very enjoyable for everyone. Many towns and villages are gearing up with lighting and decorations everywhere, do go and check them out and participate in decorations if you enjoy doing so. Like the saying goes "When in Lanzarote, do as the Lanzaroteons do"!!!!
