How did the Camels Arrive in Lanzarote?

According to a book by Agustín Millares Torres, “General History of the Canary Islands”, Camels were brought to Lanzarote and Fuerteventura between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century. The camels were later distributed in the rest of the Canary Islands.

How did the Camels Survive?

Camels as we all know need very little food and water, the settlers in that time thought it was possible for the camels to adapt to the landscape here, where it hardly rains, somewhat like the deserts.

How was camel helping the people?

Like in the desert countries, camels are one more mode of transport, in the same way, camels were used by the population to transport goods, like sugarcane, from America into the Canary Islands. The camels were shipped from the Canary Islands and introduced to America and Australia to colonize them and use them for transport and agriculture.

What role do camels play at present?

After other means of transport came about in the 20th century, the population of camels started to dwindle. To stop total extinction, camels already being part of the landscape since the 16th century, now are part of Tourism in Lanzarote, humbly taking tourists on their hump in the Camel Safaris.

Where can I ride a Camel?

You can ride a camel when you visit the Camel Park and when you go through the Timanfaya National Park. For a more guided tour experience, you can enjoy a camel ride on the Short South Tour and the South Tour and a photo opportunity with the camel on the Grand Tour.
