Camels in Lanzarote are a smaller breed called Dromedary or Arabian Camels, possibly because they are believed to have been domesticated and originated in Arabia.

About Camels:

The Dromedary is a smaller camel with one hump and easily adapts to it's surroundings. They eat foliage and desert vegetation, like thorny plants, no wonder there are cacti in Lanzarote!!!! These camels are active during the day (they are hard working), and rest together in groups.

A Camel can easily go without water and food for 5-7 days, but it can be difficult to manage if proper care is not taken. It makes a special bond with it's owner or trainer. Camels are comfortable staying and resting in groups. There are lots of camel farms in Playa Blanca, Uga, Arrecife and other parts of Lanzarote, where camels are bred and taken care of, with regular veterinary checks. According to their care givers, a 2 year old camel is ready to start work. There are around 300 camels in Lanzarote.

Camels Also Work:

Camels are used for tourism and also for various festivals like Christmas, when they are stage props for the nativity or when they are transport for the Three Kings and at other processions on other islands like Tenerife. Camels also work in shifts, so you see they work really hard.

When you are going on a camel ride, make sure you are calm, cause camels can sense various temperaments of the rider on it’s back, so be calm, so that your camel takes you on a smooth never-forgetting ride.

Where can I ride a Camel?

You can ride a camel when you visit the Camel Park and when you go through the Timanfaya National Park. For a more guided tour experience, you can enjoy a camel ride on the Short South Tour and the South Tour and a photo opportunity with the camel on the Grand Tour.
