The island of Lanzarote and the Chinijo Archipelago are now part of the Global Geoparks Network by UNESCO.

The other Geoparks selected are from China, Cyprus, Greece, Indonesia, Iceland, Italy and Japan. UNESCO said in a statement on Monday, that the new geoparks decision was taken at the International Conference in Sa'in Kaigan in Japan.

This new distinction covers the whole island of Lanzarote, as well as the islands of La Graciosa, Montaña Clara, Roque del Este, Roque del Oeste and Alegranza, which form the Chinijo Archipelago, along with the abrasion platform that surrounds them, because of its volcanic nature, a total of 2,500 square kilometers, of which 866 square kilometers of landmass. UNESCO noted that Lanzarote and Chinijo Archipelago consists almost entirely of basaltic materials. The eruptions of Timanfaya, which occurred between 1730 and 1736, created the largest lava fields of the world.

This is the second Global Geoparks Network in the Canaries, after El Hierro. In Spain there are eleven out of a There are a total of 120 in 33 countries around the world, with 11 Geoparks in Spain alone.

Lanzarote is also a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, which shows that preserving our island very important.
