Gusts of 70 km/h Forecast for Lanzarote Until Saturday Night Gusts of 70 km/h Forecast for Lanzarote Until Saturday Night

Strong winds are blowing across Lanzarote and La Graciosa through to the end of Saturday, and if you are on the island this weekend the sheltered south coast is where you want to be.

Excursions Lanzarote

AEMET put a yellow warning in place from Thursday evening, running until midnight on Saturday, with gusts expected to reach 70 kilometres an hour and to blow harder still in exposed spots.

Yellow sits at the bottom of the three warning levels Spain uses, so nobody needs to cancel anything. It covers conditions that will not trouble most people going about their day but that can interfere with specific activities, which here means the sea and anything happening on it.

The north and west take the brunt

Famara and the north west coast will see the roughest water. That beach is dangerous in calm weather and this is not the weekend to go in.

Anyone with a ferry booked to La Graciosa should check with the operator before setting off from Órzola, since the crossing is exposed and sailings can be pulled when the wind is up. Boat trips and watersports along the north coast are worth confirming for the same reason.

The south is a different story

Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen sit on the sheltered side of the island and will be considerably more pleasant, which is exactly why the resorts were built where they were. Beach umbrellas and anything light on a terrace still want weighing down, and there will be sand moving about, but a beach day in the south is entirely doable.

Costa Teguise, meanwhile, is in for a very good weekend if you happen to windsurf or kitesurf. Las Cucharas will be busy.

Otherwise the weather is fine

Wind aside, conditions are settled. Some cloud drifts across the north overnight before clearing during the day, skies elsewhere stay largely clear, and the light haze that has been sitting at altitude is expected to hang around. Temperatures are much as they have been, with the south of the island possibly reaching 30 degrees.
