Earlier a Castle, now a Contemporary Art Museum by Cesar Manrique

Castillo de San José or Castle of Saint Joseph was built between 1776 and 1779 on the orders of the Spanish King Carlos III. It was primarily constructed to have a military purpose and to provide work for the islanders, who lost their jobs following volcanic eruptions earlier in the century. It was most famously known as the Fortaleza del Hambre or the Hunger Fortress.

Attractions:

It has display of art collections like Picasso, Tapies, Miro, Mompo and more put together by Cesar Manrique, after he convinced the town authorities to transform the castle from a decaying fortress into an art gallery and a Contemporary Art Museum in 1976. There is a concert hall which sees a lot of regular chamber recitals and modern music. Manrique also had a big part to play in styling the restaurant and bar.
