Cueva de los Verdes meaning green cave is amongst the best lava tube caves and a tourist attraction in Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Monte Corona erupted flowing across the Malpais de la Corona towards the sea some 3000 years ago. A solid crust was formed after lava streams cooled above as the roof of the cave. A cavern was formed locally named as a jameo after the roof of the cave collapsed in about 20 spots. The caves extend for 6 kilometers above sea level and another 1.5 kilometers below sea level making them the longest volcanic lava caves in the world.
Tourist Attraction:
For tourists, two kilometers of the cave walls are illuminated by colorful lights. The cave also has a famous concert hall with a capacity of 500 people, located near the entrance and exit of the cave. Local people took refuge in the caves from pirates and slave hunters in the 18th century.
