San Gabriel Castle transformed into a History museum

The Museo de Historia de Arrecife or the Museum of History of Arrecife is in the San Gabriel Castle on the coast of Arrecife, lanzarote.

Cultural Information:

The castle was built in 1574 to defend the harbour. There were two cannons at the front door, but unfortunately the castle was destroyed by an Algerian Pirate, Morato Arraez in 1586. It was later restored and reconstructed in 1592 by an Italian architect Leonardo Torriani.

Attractions:

The museum holds fascinating history of Arrecife with military architecture in the Canary Islands. Visiting the museum is one of things to do in Arrecife, with pleasant views of the Arrecife town from there. It can be accessed by foot via Puente de las Bolas drawbridge.

Opening hours:

The castle is open Tuesday to Friday from 10.00 to 13.00 hrs and from 16.00 to 19.00 hrs and on Saturdays from 10.00 to 13.00 hrs.
