HISTORY
Church of Saint Bartholome was founded on April 4, 1796, as per the request of Cayetano Guerra Clavijo and Perdomo and his brother Francisco.
There were other parishes annexed to it namely San Antonio de Padua in Güime; Mary Help of White Mountain; the place of worship of the Islet; St. Andrew in Tao and Our Lady of the Rock in Mozaga, the last two belong to the municipality of La Villa de Teguise.
CONSTRUCTION
The church was constructed between 1779 and 1783. It was constructed looking at the small size of the old chapel and the determination of Francisco Tomás Guerra Clavijo, Major War, who mobilized the neighborhood through public subscriptions and donations to raise money for the new building.
In the late 19th century, lots more construction was seen. The church also sold its properties, possibly to maintain costs. In the second decade of the 20th century the Parish House was eventually bought.
ARCHITECTURE
The church ceilings are wood based with panels brought from Tenerife. The roof of the nave was painted blue from 1901 to 1971, but later the wood was restored with its original colour. The sacristy of a plant, is located in the rear of the Altar. Between 1971, 1962 and 1992, the church has seen lots of restorations and many a times this work affected the interiors of the building due to lack of enough funds. In 1992 a store for placing offal objects, catafalque etc. was added to the left of the sacristy.
A meeting room was made but later demolished. Side retablos and pulpit were removed and burned and the baptismal font disappeared in 1974. A Latin cross with the sacristy behind the chancel also adorns the church. A new side chapel wall was also built. It can be accessed from the front of a stairway with masonry arch and corner covered with black stonework.
In the front there is a small opening with a cross and an oculus, on the window. From the old building the sacristy is preserved and in the Chapel of the Epistle it’s founder is buried. The bell has stonework of the epistle, topped with a small dome and completely whitewashed with oval shapes.
